11.8. Check of a backlash of the wheel bearing

Wheels Mondeo rotate together with not demanding servicing двухрядным ball-bearings. Modern bearings of back bridges can serve today about 150 000 km. Wheel bearings of the forward bridge, naturally, are loaded more strongly, than back, therefore at them service life is not so great. Wheel bearings in Mondeo are established at assemblage, at their damage only full replacement here is necessary. Forthcoming repair has in due time an effect: the worn out bearings become "appreciable" extremely strong noise from rotation. Breaking noise at the right turn accurately specify in the defective bearing forward at the left. Noise at the left turn accordingly on the right wheel bearing. Transfer better work on workshop replacement – the bearing, a working ring, the nave and a rotary support of the steering mechanism are made with very high admissions. Appropriate installation assumes use of special tools. However before visiting a workshop, carry out the following test:

  • Put the car on an asphalt or stone covering. Grasp a wheel in the top part and try to move rhythmically it across a longitudinal axis of the car. The faultless bearing copes with it silently and without a backlash.
  • If during this check on forward wheel bearings to establish presence of the big backlash, ask the assistant to press a brake – you "shake" at this time on a corresponding wheel. If after that the backlash still exists, find for the defective axial hinge.
